LAST MESSAGE FROM OPERA HOUSE HOST, HANK CATES
Dear Friends,
It has been some time since I have been on the air, though it has not been for lack of want, sharing my love for opera on Saturday afternoons on The Opera House. As some of you know, I was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2011, and while I have undergone various treatments, including surgery, the cancer has unfortunately returned. While things aren't rosy, I can tell you that I am comfortable, upright, and my passion for opera and the station remain strong.
I can't begin to tell you how much I have appreciated the cards, calls, and e-mails wishing me well. I miss all of you more than you can imagine. As much as I loved being on the air, more than anything, I loved LISTENING to the opera, be it The Met, Lyric Opera of Chicago, or our own stellar Dayton Opera, WITH you. As you marveled at the talent on display weekly, I was often amazed right along with you. Sharing those experiences with you have made my life one well-lived. For all those Saturday afternoons we shared together, I thank you. For allowing me to be a part of your lives, I thank you. For giving me the rare privilege of discovering the world of opera with you on the radio, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
--Hank
P.S. Please keep a bad joke in mind for me.
